This week, Almond Elementary School opened its doors to a very special group of visitors:
Sheriff Christina Corpus, Assistant Sheriff Sergio Enriquez, Chairman James Brown, and Marines from the 23rd Marine Regiment (Sgt. Marissa Escobedo) and Recruiting Station San Francisco (Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Naula and Staff Sergeant Angelina Monnette).
The 4th grade class of Ms. Samantha Nguyen graciously hosted our group as part of their efforts to learn more about law enforcement, the United States Marine Corps, and the ways we partner to support our community. Their curiosity centered especially on the Shop with a Hero program—a signature event that brings together law enforcement, service members, and local youth for a day of mentorship, joy, and giving.
The students not only asked insightful questions, but also inspired us with their enthusiasm and eagerness to make a difference. In fact, the class is planning a fundraiser to support the Shop with a Hero initiative, showing that leadership and community service can begin at any age.
To close the visit, Sheriff Corpus presented every student with the official San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Challenge Coin. The Marines followed by coining the students with military challenge coins—a tradition that symbolizes respect, unity, and belonging. The excitement on the children’s faces reflected the true spirit of connection between our youth and the heroes who serve them.
We are so grateful to Ms. Nguyen and her 4th graders for welcoming us, and for their commitment to supporting programs that bring hope and opportunity to local children.
